Samsung sells over 300 million phones this year

Samsung is capping off a wildly-successful year by announcing that it has surpassed 300 million phone sales in 2011. That’s at least 20 million more phones than it sold last year and it giving credit to its flagship Galaxy S II for the increased sales.

You have to remember that Samsung still makes a lot of feature phones or dumb phones and that those make up the majority of its sales but the Galaxy S II has been a major hit around the globe. The device was first introduced in December at the Mobile World Congress show and then hit the market a few months later in Korea and other markets where it sold tens of millions of units. The U.S. market just got the device a few months ago and I expect it to do quite well for Samsung.

It’s very helpful that the Galaxy S II is a really good phone that was top of the line when it was released. Additionally, Samsung has done a great job helping to establish the Galaxy brand with funny ads and this helps it stand out from the crowded field of Android phones.

So, it looks like a great year for Samsung but it will still likely fall behind Nokia in terms of overall phone shipments for the year.
