Social media is a double edged sword. On one hand companies can now tell their story directly to their customers, rendering institutions such as IntoMobile effectively useless for those who want marketing fluff and could care less about objectivity. On the other hand social media also enables low level employees to say something that wasn’t supposed to be said. Case in point, the Twitter account @Swisscom_Care was setup to help customers who use the Swiss operator’s network. Xavier Han, who goes by @Gimly81, asked a simple question: When is the Nokia Lumia 800, the Lumia 900, and the HTC Titan going to be made available via Swisscom. The answer? The Lumia 800 comes out in January, the Lumia 900 comes out in February, and the HTC Titan isn’t going to be stocked by us, so check out the HTC Radar instead. That one tweet revealed two very important things. First, the Lumia 900 is indeed real. We saw it show up in a developer’s logs last week, and now we’ve get a Swiss operator directly mentioning it. And second, the Lumia 900 is going to come out in February, meaning it’ll likely be unveiled at Mobile World Congress.
As for what’s going to make the Lumia 900 special compared to the Lumia 800, rumors circulating around the internet suggest that it’s going to have a massive 4.3 inch screen, 1 GB of RAM, NFC, and that it’ll be one of the first devices to run Windows Phone Tango, which is supposed to be a minor update to the current version of Windows Phone 7.5, known as Mango. If we’re lucky it’ll also have 4G LTE support, but you never know at this point.
Are you excited about the Lumia 900 or are you still unsure whether or not Windows Phone is right for you? This writer isn’t going to take Windows Phone seriously until Windows Phone Apollo comes out in late 2012, which is rumored to support screen resolutions higher than 800 x 480 and dual core processors.
Update: We just got this email from Nokia:
Hi Stefan,
Saw your story.
Apparently the Call Centre Agent from Swisscom confused the Lumia 710 when questioned about a ‘Lumia 900’. We contacted Swisscom and they have already corrected this one. Here the adapted Tweet from Swisscom: @Gimly81 The Nokia Lumia 710 will be available by end of Feb. We’re not informed about the device you mentioned. Please excuse the mistake.
Regards,
Mark Squires
To be honest, we have no idea how you could confuse the numbers 900 and 710.
