Nokia’s Lumia 800, as it exists today, can be purchased in three different colors: pink, blue, and black. Recently Nokia announced a white version, and we’ve been reporting on rumors of a yellow version for the past two months. That’s five colors in total. Apparently Nokia doesn’t think that’s enough though. A video produced by AdContentMedia, who makes commercials for various companies, including Samsung and Sony Ericsson, has uploaded a video to their YouTube channel that’s an advertisement for Nokia’s Luna Bluetooth headset. At the end of the video they show off the Lumia 800 in various colors, several of which we’ve already seen, and two of them we haven’t: red and green. And that’s it really. We don’t know if those colors will be made available, and if they are indeed real … then we have no idea which markets they’ll be sold in.
The bigger question is just how much differentiating should Nokia be doing? By that we mean how many product SKUs should Nokia be managing? Using Apple as a reference, they have three phones on the market, each in two colors, each with three different storage capacities. That’s 18 variants, and yes, we’re ignoring GSM/CDMA iPhone 4 variants. Samsung is obviously much worse. Looking at the Samsung Galaxy S II alone, there are more versions than we care to count. One for the international market, one for each major operator in the United States, one with 4G LTE, one with 4G LTE and a 720p resolution screen, and don’t forget about the colors!
Look, we like colors, and the Lumia 800 is a hell of a striking device, but we got to wonder how Nokia’s Chief Operating Officer sleeps at night with so many variants out in the wild. Anyway, which color do you like best? We’re fans of the black model, some in the office like the blue, but everything else kind of just screams “pay attention to me!”.
