Samsung working on Galaxy phone with edge-to-edge display?

Samsung’s pushing bezel-less televisions more than any other manufacturer and now the company seems to be working on the first bezel-less smartphone, according to a report. Samsung is said to be developing a Galaxy B handset that would get rid of the standard bezel in favor of an edge-to-edge display.

The entire front side of this rumored Galaxy B device would be consumed by one giant touch screen display except for a small area at the top dedicated to a speaker, front-facing camera, and I assume some sensors, too.

It certainly won’t be easy to design or manufacture. In fact, it wouldn’t even be possible without the release of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which no longer requires separate hardware buttons for navigation. The software buttons on the bottom of the display remain at all times when using the phone to exit an app, go back, or switch to a different app.

A bezel-less phone does pose some usability problems though. Depending on the way certain people hold their phones, a missing bezel increases the chances for inadvertent tapping on the touch screen. Once in a blue moon I have that problem with my iPhone and that has a decent amount of space on the sides of the display, to say the least. To make the Galaxy B work, Samsung would have to ditch the rounded corners to accommodate the edge-to-edge display the contoured sides so users can have something to grip.

The Galaxy B sure would be a beauty if it did make it to market and kudos to Samsung for trying something different for once.
