LG wants to sell 35 million smartphones this year

It’s no secret that LG hasn’t been relevant since the days of the LG Chocolate, but the Korean-based manufacturer is hell-bent on changing that perception this year. The company has a lofty goal; a vision that sees the sell of 80 million phones in total, 35 million of that total is smartphones, according to a senior exec who told Korea Times.

In an interview with the Korean publication, the LG exec also detailed how the company intends to ship at least 8 million LTE-enabled smartphones to super charge margins. “I think LTE, high-definition and quad-core will be the key words this year. With fine-tuned technology and strategies, LG will recover our once-lost brand awareness.”

Apparently, this isn’t false confidence, as the senior exec mentioned how the company’s handset unit turned a profit in the first quarter, which is the first positive gain its had in six quarters. The company seems poised to deliver some way better smartphones to the market really soon.

For instance, LG had a spectacular Mobile World Congress, announcing some of its best phones ever, like the Optimus Vu, Optimus 4X HD, as well as the new “L-Style” series, including the Optimus L3, L5 and L7.

Moving 35 million smartphones seems way too optimistic, but I’d say it’s good to see LG refocused again. The form factor has vastly improved on many of their phones, as I was pleased with the overall design and feel of the LG myTouch when I reviewed it. Let’s see what happens when the new phones are out in the market for at least a quarter.
