RIM clarifies its stance on Playbook jailbreaking

In a post on RIM’s Inside BlackBerry for Business Blog, Adrian Stone, the Director of the BlackBerry Security Incident Response Team (BBSIRT), explained RIM’s stance on Playbook  jailbreaking. In a nutshell, he discouraged the practice and asked BlackBerry device owners not to install any jailbreak tools.

Stone explains that when a jailbreak is reported, RIM will investigate how users have breached the software’s security. Once the exploit is identified, RIM will issue a security advisory, if appropriate, and patch the vulnerability in a future update. As expected, the company repeats the now standard warning that jailbreaking compromises your data, makes your device less stable and voids your warranty.

This response is similar to Apple which also tries to close jailbreak exploits via regular software updates. It turns into a cat and mouse game in which the manufacturer is always patching holes and hackers are always trying to find new ones.
