In its latest report Juniper examines games on tablets, suggesting that the total end-user game revenues will reach $3.1 billion by 2014, up from $491 million in 2011. The research company argues that the large screen size and excellent graphics capabilities of tablets will encourage users to purchase games and in-game items. Moreover, tablet games provide users with additional details which are not necessarily visible on smartphones.
Furthermore, tablets are also expensive devices, usually costing around $500 (iPad and 10-inch Android models made by big companies). In that sense their owners tend to have a higher disposable income (than the general smartphone user base) and are thus spending more on their app purchases.
Some other findings from the report include:
- Social and casual games will account for the lion’s share of mobile games downloads.
- Spend on tablet games will increase dramatically, accounting for nearly a third of overall mobile games revenues by 2016.
- Mobile games revenues on feature phones will halve over the next five years.
