New Production Method Cuts Flexible OLED Costs

Roll-to-roll OLED manufacturing

You might remember Sony showing off that crazy super-thin, super-flexible screen last year, all thanks to emerging OLED technologies. OLED promises to bring higher brightness, more colours, thinner screens and lower power consumption. Definitely the next generation of mobile displays, but the biggest hurdle to date has been prohibitive production costs. Luckily the ROLLED Project has developed a roll-to-roll manufacturing method which could print out enough flexible OLED screen per run to save three to five times the costs of traditional techniques.

This is big news for handset manufacturers who have held off on making the big jump because OLEDs are just too dang expensive to make. OLED displays are already trickling into the market, but roll-to-roll manufacturing could not only make them more widespread, but could also knock down the pricetag a couple of notches.
