ZTE to ship 40 million smartphones this year?

ZTE is super bullish on its prospects in the smartphone market this year. According to DigiTimes‘ sources at the Taiwan-based makers of handset components, the Chinese company will ship between 35 and 40 million smartphones this year, which is a significant increase from 11 million units shipped last year. Judging by their extensive line-up unveiled during this year’s Mobile World Congress, we tend to think ZTE will manage to reach this goal and who knows, maybe even surpass its own estimates.

Meanwhile, the other China-based handset maker Huawei plans to increase its smartphone production too, aiming to hit 60 million units by the end of the year, up from 16 million in 2011.

At the moment both companies are mostly targeting the lower-to-mid end of the market with Huawei planning to launch its high-end gear later in the year. Again, from what we’ve seen they do stand a chance to grab a piece of the market with their D quad series.

We’ll definitely follow through on this story and let you know as soon as we have something new to add. Stay tuned…
