Kindle Fire powers strong Amazon quarter

Amazon announced a strong first quarter with $13.18 billion in revenues and $130 million in profits and the company is crowing about its Kindle lineup, particularly the Kindle Fire. The company still didn’t give exact sales figures but other reports suggest the Fire is on fire (sorry).

In its press release, the company said, “Kindle Fire remains the #1 bestselling, most gifted, and most wished for product across the millions of items available on Amazon.com since launch. In the first quarter, 9 out of 10 of the top sellers on Amazon.com were digital products – Kindle, Kindle books, movies, music and apps.”

The numbers come as a report from ComScore found that the Kindle Fire now owns 54 percent of the Android tablet market. Sure, the Android tablet market is nowhere near the size of the iPad but that’s still an impressive feat for the Kindle Fire, particularly because it doesn’t have any Google backing.

In other mobile Amazon news, the company launched in-app purchases for its Appstore and this could be a boon for Android developers. Independent research already found that the Amazon Appstore provided more revenues for app makers than Google Play, so the in-app purchase capability may generate even more revenue.
