RIM admits it orchestrated the Wake Up flashmob

Yesterday, we reported that Research in Motion was reportedly behind the Wake Up flashmob that took Apple’s Sydney, Australia store by storm last week. While many believed it was Samsung behind the campaign to promote the imminent unveiling of the Galaxy S III superphone being unveiled on Thursday in London, RIM has officially named themselves responsible for the orchestration of the flashmob.

The move is part of a larger marketing campaign RIM has planned for the launch of the BlackBerry 10 platform, which we should be learning more about later this morning. Embedded in the source code for the Wake Up website was a countdown timer that was counting down to July 2nd, 2012 at 12:30 PM PST, a date believed to be the release date for BlackBerry 10.

Could we see RIM’s next smartphone OS as early as July, with the first phones set to be released around October? Fortunately, we don’t have much time to wait, as RIM is set to show off a preview of BlackBerry 10 in just a few minutes at BlackBerry World, where CEO Thorsten Heins is set to give his keynote at 6 AM PST. Marin is livetweeting the event this morning, so you’ll want to tune in to the IntoMobile Twitter account.

A full video livestream of the event can be found at BlackBerry World’s Webcast.
