We have three data points regarding Nokia’s Windows Phone sales. One, the Lumia 800 went on sale on November 15, 2011. Two, on January 26, 2012, the Finnish handset maker said it has sold “over a million Lumia units to date.” Three, Nokia announced that they sold over 2 million Lumia devices in Q1 2012. We’re going to have to wait until July, when Nokia announces their Q2 2012 financial results, to know how well the 4G LTE enabled Lumia 900 did on AT&T in America, and how the HSPA+ variant did around the world.
Now when the Lumia 800 launched almost half a year ago, operators were bundling things with it to make it more appealing. Orange UK, for example, would give you a free XBOX 360 if you signed a two year contract. There’s another promotion that’s just been announced, which is sadly UK only, but at least it’s operator independent. Anyone who buys either a Nokia Lumia 800 or Lumia 900 this month can ping Nokia and request a free pair of Monster headphones. Specially the “Nokia Purity HD Stereo Headset by Monster“, which goes by the model number WH-930. Right now they go for between 125 GBP and 140 GBP on Amazon UK, depending on the color, though Nokia says they cost 199 GBP to make it seem like you’re getting a better deal.
The bigger question is should you even buy a Lumia 800 or Lumia 900? If you’re the kind of person who buys a phone and then keeps it for two years, then keep your wallet shut until Nokia announces their Windows Phone 8 flagship device later this year. It’ll have a 720p HD screen, dual core processor, NFC, and most importantly it’ll have Windows Phone 8, which we know isn’t going to come to today’s Windows Phone 7.5 devices, unfortunately.
If on the other hand you change your phone twice a year, then go for it, at least you’ll get a pair of headphones that will work with your next handset.
