Walmart slashing prices on the iPhone 4S (Updated)

Walmart is dropping the prices on both the iPhone 4 and 4S in select locations. According to Cult of Mac, a Walmart store out in Edmond, Oklahoma is offering the 16GB iPhone 4S for $114, and The Verge reported this morning that an Austin, Texas Walmart store is offering the 16GB iPhone 4S for $114 as well.

These stores are selling the latest iOS smartphone at a $74 discount compared to the competition. Not bad, huh? If you hit up Wal-Mart’s Web site, the price of the iPhone 4S  is $188 with a note that says, “Store pricing may vary” at select stores. Moreover, the 8GB iPhone 4 is also available with a $34 price cut at the two Walmart stores, according to both reports. The new prices apply for AT&T upgrades and new activations only — so Verizon customers are out of the loop.

Of course, this kind of discount could suggest the new version iPhone may be on the way, as Walmart did an identical price cut one month before the release of the iPhone 4S last year.

That being said, we’re not going to speculate on an imminent announcement of the new iPhone, because frankly, it doesn’t make sense that the new iPhone would be announced this summer. I’m guessing it’s just a few stores trying to clear some inventory, so lets not jump to conclusions.

Updated: Walmart told 9to5Mac that the low price was an error that surfaced in a few stores. The price is now back to $199.
