Augmented reality technology, which we used to love for helping us get around cities and learn something new about our surrounding, just got rogue. The new iPhone app called VoterView is focused on politics, campaigns and elections, allowing voters to view AR content on campaign mailers, print advertisements, outdoor signage and digital collateral. Moreover, social networking element also comes built-in so you can further annoy your friends, neighbors and colleagues about your political views.

Unsurprisingly, the company behind this project already has a client, Lee Leffingwell who is using the app as part of his re-election efforts as mayor of Austin, Texas. This specific campaign features a 30-second 3D AR advertisement tied to Leffingwell’s closing campaign mailer and a full-page print ad in a local Austin newspaper. In case you wonder, the election day is today.

Of course, this is just a beginning and soon enough I’m sure we’ll see politicians occupying media space in all of our “realities,” augmented or not…
