Samsung Galaxy Appeal: An AT&T prepaid exclusive that combines QWERTY with Android

We’ve lost track of how many Samsung Galaxy phones are out on the market, but that’s OK since there are only a handful that actually matter. Is the new Galaxy Appeal one of them? Let’s find out. First, we have no idea how much this thing will actually cost. AT&T didn’t include that piece of information in their press release. Second, it’s made out of recycled materials, which sounds awesome, but we’ve had some pretty bad experiences in the past with devices like the Samsung Reclaim for Sprint. That thing literally fell apart in your hands after just a few months. Third, AT&T is asking $50 per month for unlimited talk and text. You have to pay more for data, with 50 MB costing you $5 per month, 200 MB costing you $15 per month, and finally 1 GB costing $25 per month. Forth, the phone itself is uninspiring. It has a 3.2 inch screen, runs Android 2.3, has a 3 megapixel camera, and … that’s it really. Fifth, do you really need five reasons not to buy this thing? Four should be enough.

So what should you do instead? Go to Straight Talk’s website, get a SIM card that costs you $45 per month and gives you unlimited talk, text, and 2 GB of data, and then shove that thing into any smartphone you want. For $399 you can get what’s arguably the best Android device on the market, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. If that’s too much money, then there’s the Samsung Galaxy Ace, which can best be though of as Samsung’s interpretation of the iPhone 3GS. That’s just $265. Want to go with something even cheaper? For $199 you can get the HTC Surround, which admittedly is an older Windows Phone, but that doesn’t matter since all Windows Phone are on track to receive the latest Tango software at some point this summer.

Nice try AT&T, but you failed. Again.
