Sprint may be shutting down its iDEN network, but that doesn’t have to affect its roaming partners like Canada’s TELUS. Actually, it will definitely make travelling from Canada to the U.S. harder, requiring carrying out an additional phone for select Mike network fans, but when inside Canada – for the time being, you can still use the awful Mike devices the way you got used to.
Here’s what TELUS said in a statement:
TELUS currently has no plans to turn down our own iDEN network, but will evolve from the Sprint-Nextel iDEN partnership to launch a Push to Talk solution on LTE well before any shutdown of Mike. TELUS is focused on developing LTE as a high speed data network with built-in Quality of Service and low latency perfectly suited for Push to Talk over IP, rather than launching interim solutions currently available on HSPA.
In other words, before shutting it down completely, TELUS will launch an alternative LTE-based push-to-talk network for users who can’t live (or work) without the capability…
