EA Mobile to join the freemium games market

Freemium games are obviously working for large gaming publishers like Glu Mobile and Gameloft when EA wants to join this trend. Up until this point, Electronic Arts only offered premium titles such as Need for Speed, The Sims 3, Madden NFL and Tiger Woods. And while that strategy is still working for the company, freemium games are apparently bringing even more cash.

According to Nick Earl, who heads up EA’s mobile and social worldwide studios, they’ve started to see that freemium was coming in, and it took them a long time to move over. He added that EA is “behind” its major rivals.

Earl went on saying that things have started to change, adding: “There will be a few one-time download games in the future, but they are such the exception, and the norm will be freemium games.”

The first freemium mobile game from EA will be The Simpsons, which will launch at some point this summer. The game starts off with Homer causing a nuclear explosion that wipes out Springfield and it’s your job to rebuild the city using different characters that are unlocked along the way… Sounds like fun and since it’s free and involves everyone’s favorite family, we’ve no reason to believe it won’t be a smashing success. Can’t wait. 😉
