Toshiba Thrive Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update delayed until Fall

If you’re holding onto a Toshiba Thrive (10 or 7 incher), it looks like you’re going to have to wait until Fall to get a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich. Toshiba has delayed the updates for unknown reasons. Whatever the reasoning might be, this isn’t the first time that a delay has happened for the tablets.

Initially set to get the Android 4.0 bump in Spring, Toshiba pushed the date back to sometime in the summer, and now it’s being pushed back to early fall. By that time, we’ll have seen Android Jelly Bean, which may make the update less impressive when it finally arrives. That said, and we don’t want to set any expectations, but maybe Toshiba is waiting for Android 4.1 to arrive before it sends out the update to the tablets.

The Toshiba forums posted an update on the Ice Cream Sandwich status of the tablets yesterday,

We are working hard to bring Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich to our Thrive tablets. While we originally estimated it would be ready this spring, we now estimate the update will be delivered to all Thrive 10” and 7” tablets by early fall. Apologies for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

The first response to the update would likely satisfy many users, but we don’t see it happening any time soon.

So why can’t Toshiba allow us to sign up for an open beta test of the ICS update then? The beta test would not only satisfy fans of the device but allow Toshiba to collect a great deal of information about various bugs to be fixed and etc.

With the Summer solstice passing just yesterday, the idea of waiting until Fall might be hard to swallow. Still, as long as the tablets get upgraded to something that’s not Honeycomb, it’ll be worth it. But that’s to say you won’t be rocking the Nexus tablet at that point in time.
