Popular news reader Pulse has seemingly found a way to make some cash – by selling content subscriptions for Premium Sources. Initially they are offering 3 different paid channels from The Wall Street Journal – WSJ Water Cooler ($0.99/month), WSJ Political Report ($3.99/month), and WSJ Technology Digest ($3.99/month).
At the moment, the new service is available for iOS users only, who can get this content using the power of in-app purchases. The process is apparently super-easy, requiring just a few clicks before your iTunes account is charged for the subscription.
Of course, this is just a start, with Pulse saying they have “many more exclusive and noteworthy Premium Source offerings in the works” which will be announced “soon.”
As far as I can tell, both Pulse users and content providers/creators benefit from this scheme. As an end-user, you still get a ton of free content, while Premium content will cost you few bucks per month. We’ll see whether enough users will to pay to get their news delivered through Pulse…
