Apple’s next U.S. courtroom target: the Samsung Galaxy S III

Did you think Apple was going to stop chasing after Samsung once it won a preliminary injunction against the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the United States? Did you think once more that Apple would stop after it later won a preliminary injunction against the Galaxy Nexus smartphone in the United States? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions, I’m pointing and laughing at you in my head right now. No, Apple refuses to give up the legal battles with its biggest handset competitor and now it has its eyes on the only phone in the world designed specifically for humans, the Galaxy S III.

In the past, Apple and Samsung threw most of their punches overseas in places like Australia and Europe, but recently it’s extended into American territory and the legal war has been in Apple’s favor so far. The company has a set of pretty broad patents it’s been using as weapons such as one for “system and method for performing an action on a structure in computer-generated data” or “method, system, and graphical user interface for providing word recommendations.”

As someone who owns an iPhone, iPad, MacBook Air, and Apple TV, even I must admit Samsung seemingly put in at least a decent amount of effort designing the Galaxy S III to be as different from the iPhone as possible. The only thing that comes to mind as a blatant rip-off is S Voice of Siri.

Apple disagrees with me though. It originally took aim at the Galaxy S III in mid-June with no success. Apple isn’t launching any official attacks on the device just yet, but make no mistake that Samsung’s latest flagship Android device is a clear enemy. Analyst Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets said a victorious ban on the Galaxy S III would leave Samsung with “big problems on its hands.” You don’t need an analyst to predict that.
