iOS 6 Beta 3 lets Apple TV send audio to AirPlay-enabled speakers

A few days ago, Apple fanboys got a treat when iOS 6 beta 3 for developers released, showing off more of what we should expect in the fully-baked version of iOS 6 this Fall. One of the surprise features discovered within Apple’s updated operating system is the ability to send audio from the Apple TV to an AirPlay-enabled speaker system wirelessly. Sweet, huh?

This feature is badass for those of us (like myself) who hate having a bunch of wires and cords lying around. Supposedly, the way this new feature will work is the Apple TV will detect AirPlay-enabled speaker systems connected to the same wireless network, and then allow you to choose them for audio output. A huge improvement when you consider that iOS 5 on the Apple TV only lets users receive AirPlay content, which is still a cool feature for the iPhone and iPad.

Not bad, right? Well, before you get all excited and stuff, you must know something. The new iOS 6 AirPlay feature doesn’t support 5.1 surround sound, so for the moment, wirelessly syncing to your surround sound home entertainment system is a no go. Still, this was discovered in the beta 3 version of iOS 6, so there’s plenty of time for Apple to incorporate it into the final release.
