It looks like Google just gobbled up another company today, and this time it’s Sparrow. The third-party email application for iOS and OSX recently announced the acquisition via Twitter and its official blog.
At the moment, Sparrow’s website is running very slow for us, or not loading at all, but we did get to see the announcement post, which reads a little something like this
We’re excited to announce that Sparrow has been acquired by Google!
We care a lot about how people communicate, and we did our best to provide you with the most intuitive and pleasurable mailing experience.
Now we’re joining the Gmail team to accomplish a bigger vision — one that we think we can better achieve with Google.
We’d like to extend a special thanks to all of our users who have supported us, advised us, given us priceless feedback and allowed us to build a better mail application. While we’ll be working on new things at Google, we will continue to make Sparrow available and provide support for our users.
We had an amazing ride and can’t thank you enough.

As you might expect from the blog post above, the Sparrow team is joining up with the Gmail team to enhance features of Gmail. Of course, we have little idea as to what Google’s plans are for Sparrow, or what this “bigger vision” entails, but judging from some of the responses on Twitter, Sparrow users are more concerned with the search giant ruining the service. We’ll just have to wait and see what this new acquisition holds, but stay tuned in the mean time!
