HTC Desire HD gets unofficial Ice Cream Sandwich update

HTC has disappointed its Desire HD users, having left them without their serving of Ice Cream Sandwich. The Taiwanese company did listen to the community and even responded to the petition signed by more than 15,000 users, but the answer was no – it’s too hard to learn the old dog a new trick.

According to HTC, making the Desire HD run Android 4.0 would “require re-partitioning device storage and overwriting user data in order to install this update.” And while tech savvy users wouldn’t have problem with that, the majority would find it daunting to install everything from the scratch. So HTC stopped working on it.

But XDA Developers community didn’t buy that. They are, after all, technically advanced people and they think something should be done. So they did, having ported ROM from the HTC Incredible S to the Desire HD. As far as we know, everything is working like a charm, though if you want to take this route, you better read the documentation carefully. It’s not as easy as performing the over-the-air update and some things could go wrong, potentially bricking your phone. Moreover, you should backup all your data before proceeding. You can’t blame IntoMobile if something goes wrong. 😉

Here’s the page where you’ll get all the instructions how to make this happen.
