Samsung to unveil Android-based Galaxy Camera

What do you get when you take an ordinary-looking Samsung Android smartphone and build it in to the back of a compact camera? The Samsung Galaxy Camera. It’s real and minus the phone functionality, that’s pretty much what it is.

The Galaxy Camera is a bulky device, but it has its reasons. The camera lens on the front has a 16MP BSI CMOS sensor and is capable of up to 21x optical zoom. Other than the power and shutter buttons on the top, the controls are found on the 4.8-inch HD super LCD touch screen display located on the back. It’s powered by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (some reports suggest it’ll have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but for now let’s just hope for the best) which means you can also get all of the regular apps you’d be able to download on a phone from Google Play, though photography apps like Instagram would shine brightest on the Galaxy Camera. Pictures of the food you’re eating are going to look more delectable to friends than ever before!

Inside the device is a 1.4GHz quad-core processor and 8GB of internal memory with a microSD cart slot on board to expand upon that. It’ll run off of the juice from a 1650mAh battery.

No word on pricing and availability just yet. Samsung is widely expected to unveil the Galaxy Camera later today during its press event at the IFA electronics show. One thing is for sure: Apple is going to have a hard time suing Samsung over this thing.
