Cell phone diet in Japan gives the curious dieter nutritional information through mobile phone picturesOur friends to the East have a new mobile services for those trying to keep an eye on their figure. In response to an alarming trend where Osaka official, Satomi Onishi, says “Japanese have been getting fatter, especially men in their 20s and 30s, and there is concern over what they learned about nutrition when they were younger,” the government has rolled out a cell phone diet program. No, it’s not a diet consisting of mobile phones. The service allows the calorically curious to snap a mobile picture of their impending meal and get nutrition information texted back to them. The image of, say a bowl of noodles, is sent to a nutritional professional who analyzes the meal and texts nutritional information (like calorie content) back to the user. Onishi says, “We’re hoping that this program can help us to get a handle on the problem.”
