MWC 2013: Huawei announces the Ascend P2

Huawei is the first to kick off Mobile World Congress with the announcement of the Ascend P2. The P2 will take the place of the Ascend P1, which was announced as “the world’s thinnest smartphone” last year at CES 2012.

The P2 is a strong mid-range handset with a 1.5GHz quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. It doesn’t keep its title as “the world’s thinnest smartphone,” but it does check in with a still slim 8mm profile. On the back of the device is a 13-megapixel camera and on the front is a 1.2-megapixel shooter. It’ll ship with 16GB of onboard storage.

Huawei is promoting the Ascend P2 as the “world’s fastest smartphone” as it ships with support for  LTE Category 4, which allows for impressive download speeds of up to 150Mbps.  The phone also features Huawei’s battery saving technology that’ll reduce battery consumption by more than 20 percent when compared to other smartphones

The P2 includes a 4.7-inch,Infinity Edge display with a 1280 x 720 resolution. For some reason, Huawei opted for a 720P display instead of the 1080P display that we are seeing on most new flagship phones this year. Like most new phones, the display is crafted of Gorilla Glass 2.

Just like the Ascend Mate and the D2, the P2 is powered by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Huawei’s Emotion UI. The Ascend P2 will be available in all European countries starting in Q2 2013. It’ll cost €399 ($525 USD, £345) and will be available in black and white.
