9to5Mac: Apple kicked around names like TelePod before settling on iPhone

According to a report in 9to5Mac, Apple had an eclectic mix of names like TelePod and Tripod that it was tossing around before it finally decided to use iPhone as the name for its first smartphone. This information was presented during a talk by Ken Segall, who worked with Steve Jobs and Apple on some of its largest advertising campaigns.

Speaking at a University of Arizona event, Segall told the attendees that Apple considered naming its first smartphone the Telepod, the Mobi or the iPad instead of iPhone. Apple had a reasoning for each name choice, but decided to go with iPhone, even though Cisco owned a trademark on and already had a product bearing that name.

You can watch a clip of the presentation and read analysis in the article by 9to5Mac’s Scott Buscemi.
