UK: Asus FonePad to be available for pre-order on April 12 for 180 GBP

The Asus FonePad will be available for pre-order in the UK on Friday, when interested folks will be able to secure their unit for 179.99 GBP (about $275) from Carphone Warehouse, Amazon and Sainsbury’s. That, of course, is the price of an unlocked, SIM-free unit and you’ll eventually have to get some kind of plan to access the Internet in places where there’s no Wi-Fi signal around; or to make phone calls, if you don’t mind holding the FonePad next to your ear.

Specs wise, Asus’ phablet (or that’s just a tablet with built-in phone capabilities) packs a 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2420 processor, 7-inch 1280×800 screen, 16GB of internal storage, 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera, microSD and microSIM slots, 4,270mAh battery, while Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean is running the show. Update to Android 4.2 is coming shortly…

Now we’ll see whether a concept like this could fly, and whether people will actually use FonePad to make phone calls. I would say it will mostly be used as a tablet, but you never know. What do you think?
