AOSP now available for Sony Xperia Z

Sony launched the AOSP project for its brand new Xperia Z smartphone, allowing the hacking community to join the fun and customize things as they please. Available from Sony’s GitHub, the code includes both open-source and proprietary binaries, though don’t expect to get the full package. Qualcomm’s stuff is not available, and neither are modem and camera binaries which Sony “cannot publish at this time.”

A lot of things is working already – the phone boots up, and we have the SD-card, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, LED light and sensors (partially) working.

Developers looking to contribute are invited to visit the AOSP for Xperia Z project on GitHub, make themselves familiar with the code, and look at the issue list to see where they might be able chip in. All contributions are handled through the GitHub tool.

Do let us know if you do help make an awesome custom ROM for Sony’s flagship. We’ll try to give it some space on IntoMobile. 😉
