The Netherlands-based Fairphone has started taking pre-orders for what it says is the “world’s first ethically sourced smartphone.” The company is claiming that their product is made using materials from a completely transparent supply chain that involves conflict-free resources, worker welfare and e-waste programs.

Specs wise, the Fairphone comes with a 4.3-inch qHD 540×960 touchscreen (Dragontrail Glass), MediaTek’s MTK6589M quad-core processor clocked at 1.2Ghz, 1GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear camera, 1.3-megapixel front-facing one, 2,000mAh battery and 16GB of internal storage. Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is running the show right from the get-go.

Fairphone is currently taking pre-orders in Europe, asking 325 EUR (about $436) for the unlocked unit. They need to sell 5,000 orders to start production, with shipping expected in the fall. As I’m writing this, Fairphone reached the half of their goal with 18 days left.

So, if you’re looking for an ethically made smartphone with mid-range smartphone, we say – forget everything else and grab the Fairphone. It’s one of those “right things to buy” devices. Check it out from here.
