Watch out Qualcomm, Intel is finally launching a chip that could give it a decent share in the mobile market. Aside from the new Hashwell solutions for PCs, the chip making giant also announced next-generation of Atom chips with support of up to 8 cores, though the first chipset will be a quad-core one. When compared to current Atoms, the new microarchitecture called Silvermont — built on a 22nm process — promises 3 times performance increase or 5 times energy savings, depending on the smartphone/tablet’s current needs.

Even better, the LTE connectivity support comes built-in (Intel XMM 7160 multimode-multiband LTE) and so does “superior graphics” for devices running either Android or Windows 8.1. That said, these chips may also find its way in some lower-end laptops and desktops.

Finally, you may wonder when the first products using Intel’s new offering will be launched – we expect to see them unveiled during the forthcoming holiday season. It’s pretty obvious we’ll keep following this story and get back to you as soon as we have something new to add…
