BlackBerry has posted a net loss of $84 million for its first fiscal-quarter of this year, prompting the share price drop of 25%. However, it’s important to add that this loss is still a considerable improvement on the $518 million the company lost a year ago.

Revenues were $3.1 billion, which is 9% more than the year ago. Most of the money came from the hardware sale (71%), followed by services (26%), while software and other revenue contributed to just 3%.

The Canadian company shipped 6.8 million smartphones, which is more than last quarter but less than 7.8 million units shipped a year before. In addition, they’ve managed to move some 100,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets, despite the fact that it won’t get the BlackBerry 10 update.

According to President and CEO Thorsten Heins, they’ve continued to focus its efforts on the global roll out of the BlackBerry 10 platform. “We are still in the early stages of this launch, but already, the BlackBerry 10 platform and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 are proving themselves,” he added.
