Boston University has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple alleging the Cupertino company is using BU technology in its iPhone 5, iPad and MacBook Air. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts.
The patent in question involves a method of making a gallium nitride thin film semiconductor device. It was granted to BU computer engineering professor Theodore D. Moustakas in 1997. The complaint does not detail how Apple is using this technology.
BU claims “[Apple’s] acts of infringement have caused and will continue to cause substantial and irreparable damage to the University.” Consequently, the university is requesting damages and interest on those damages. It is also asking for an injunction to stop the sale of infringing Apple devices.
