MediaTek to make chips for future Amazon tablets?

MediaTek may have scored a deal with Amazon to make chips for the next Kindle Fire tablets, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.

It is said that Amazon could use the company’s MT8135 quad-core chipset, which is based on ARM’s big.LITTLE design. As such, we’re talking about a SoC that boasts two fast Cortex-A15 cores for graphics-rich tasks, and two slower Cortex-A7 cores for more mundane (though perhaps even more important) tasks.

Bear in mind that this is still in the “rumors phase” and even MediaTek reacted, dismissing the report only to add that it will try to tap any potential clients.

Amazon is currently ranked as the fourth largest tablet vendor in the global market with shipments reaching 1.8 – 2 million units a quarter, and could easily emerge as MediaTek’s biggest client, therefore getting a special treatment. Only time will tell whether there’s some merit in this story… or not. As usual, we’ll make sure you don’t miss a beat.
