Sega Layoffs Have Been Confirmed

In sad news, Sega of America has announced it will be laying off an unspecified amount of its workforce. Sega sources did hint that the downsizing would be “small” however, so don’t start weeping for Sonic yet!
The layoffs were confirmed today in a statement given to Venture Beat.

“As the gaming industry continues to evolve, companies must adapt and adjust in order to compete and succeed in an ever-changing environment,” a Sega spokeswoman told Venture Beat. “As a result of this, Sega of America has recently undergone a restructure that will enable the company to focus efficiently on developing new and existing content across digital platforms as well as continuing to focus on key brands for packaged goods.”

Here’s hoping the company is able to move a whole lot of Sonic and Ulala back packs!

Sega still puts out a slate of grade A titles every year, and is turning a tidy profit licensing its older games to every platform from PC to console to both Android and iOS devices.

Sega’s mascot Sonic seems to be having a good year too, with new 3DS and Wii U exclusive versions of his Lost World game coming soon, and making a showing in Sonic and Mario at the Olympic games and even the new Super Smash Bros! And Polygon recently reported that Sonic and his crew will be appearing in a new CG animated cartoon too, which would be in line with Sega’s new merchandising goals.

This sounds like more of a continuation of Sega’s restructuring under parent company, Sammy, than any doom and gloom situation for the beloved publisher. We’ll keep you posted!
