T-Mobile to drop grandfathered plans for Simple Choice plans

T-Mobile is getting rid of those old grandfathered data plans, and making customers choose between one of its current Simple Choice plans. This move is similar to what AT&T had announced a few days ago, doing away with traditional rate plans in favor of its Mobile Share plans for new customers. T-Mobile believes the change will bring a “vast majority” of customers “similar or better features at a comparable price,” according to a statement issued earlier.

The letter continues explaining the imminent changes that will unfold sometime in November, as customers can expect their old plans to be switched over to an automatically selected new plan. T-Mob claims the users being transferred over to the new plans will see no loss in service.

T-Mobile’s full statement:

Maintaining thousands of rate plans is the norm in the industry, but we think it creates unnecessary complexity. Simple is better, which is why we’re reducing the number of older plans in our systems. We’re giving customers on these plans the opportunity to choose a plan that best meets their needs. For the vast majority, their plan will provide similar or better features at a comparable price.

We’re sure the change is bound to ruffle some feathers, mainly those who still pay for grandfathered plans. However, they’d soon learn that T-Mobile’s new plans aren’t so bad, as the cheapest individual Simple Choice Plan costs $50 a month. Regardless this seems to be the trend that’s going on with all the major carriers, and the only holdout at this point is Verizon as they’re soon to follow.
