NVIDIA’s GameStream For Shield Turns The Handheld Into A Gaming Console

We’re pretty big fans of the NVIDIA Shield around here. From the insanely fast Tegra 4 and the handheld’s game streaming capabilities, the Shield is a hot piece of tech that a lot of gamers out there love. And with NVIDIA’s latest announcement, the Shield just got a whole lot better.

Today NVIDIA announced GameStream, allowing you to hook your Shield up to your TV and play games on the big screen with a Bluetooth game controller. Now the NVIDIA Shield can double up as its very own gaming console so you can play games without having the handheld in your hands at all.

With GameStream, you simply hook your NVIDIA Shield to your HDTV via a mini HDMI cable, where you can access the Steam store from your compatible GTX-powered PC. From there, you can play your games just as you would with the Shield, but on your TV with a Bluetooth gaming controller. Not only that, this “Console Mode” also allows users to play Android games right from their TVs as well.

NVIDIA’s also expanded support for game streaming:

  • Super smooth and fast performance at 60 frames per second.
  • Enhanced Wi-Fi quality of service in combination with GameStream Ready routers from leading network partners ASUS, Buffalo, D-Link, and NETGEAR.
  • Improved onscreen navigation and controls.

While GameStream will currently only be able to stream locally from a GTX-powered computer, the long-term goal of this service is to provide support for NVIDIA’s GRID cloud gaming services.

NVIDIA is set to bring a great promotion for the Shield in celebration of GameStream’s launch on October 28th. Not only is NVIDIA taking $100 off of the Shield, but is offering up a free copy of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Splinter Cell Blacklist, and Batman: Arkham Origins when you buy select GTX graphics cards.

The NVIDIA Shield is already great as it is, but the introduction of GameStream is bringing a whole new level of how you can use it.
