Goodbye Wearables: Motorola’s ‘Electronic Tattoo’ Patent is the First ‘Embeddable’

Bionic arms, legs and eyeballs? Yes please. A microphone tattoo on the neck? Motorola seems to think so, but no thanks.

A new patent that Motorola has applied for depicts a microphone, transceiver and power supply that will be tattooed directly onto the neck. The microphone would trap vibrations from your larynx and send them directly to your mobile device, cutting out background noise and bringing us all a little bit closer to the singularity.

The device could be rechargeable, and would be able to communicate through Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC or Neural Net.

Here’s a description of the electronic tattoo from Motorola’s patent application:

A system and method provides auxiliary voice input to a mobile communication device (MCD). The system comprises an electronic skin tattoo capable of being applied to a throat region of a body. The electronic skin tattoo can include an embedded microphone; a transceiver for enabling wireless communication with the MCD; and a power supply configured to receive energizing signals from a personal area network associated with the MCD. A controller is communicatively coupled to the power supply. The controller can be configured to receive a signal from the MCD to initiate reception of an audio stream picked up from the throat region of the body for subsequent audio detection by the MCD under an improved signal-to-noise ratio than without the employment of the electronic skin tattoo.

Kinda creepy, right? Wearables are definitely the next evolution in mobile devices, but Motorola’s filing it taking it to the next level. Will the electronic tattoo be the beginning of embeddables?

The electronic tattoo will be available in Tribal, Barbwire, Old English Lettering and of course, Grumpy Cat.
