Nokia Refocus app adds Lytro-like focus-later capability to PureView-branded Lumia phones

Nokia launched the powerful Refocus app for its range of PureView-branded Lumia smartphones. The application that allows users to take photos now and focus later, produces results like the Lytro digital camera… though using different technology.

Once you take a photo, the Refocus app will take 2 to 8 images “depending on what’s in view, each at five megapixels at a different focus that’ll be aligned and forged together to make one image.” This in turn will allow you to refocus photos after taking the shot.

Pretty impressive I would say and something we would like to see in every smartphone, not just those made by the Finnish company. Alas, we doubt that will happen as Microsoft (once it completes the acquisition of Nokia) will likely stick to this technology and pitch it as one of Windows Phone’s unique selling points.

Nokia Refocus comes preloaded on the Lumia 1520, and is also available for owners of the Lumia 920, Lumia 925, Lumia 928 and Lumia 1020. In order to install it on your device, it first needs to run Nokia Amber software…
