If Nokia can do it, so can Google. Yup, the RAW file support is coming to Android, and so do native burst mode shooting. In fact, Google spokesperson Gina Scigliano said that these things are already in place at the low level and the next step is to work on an API.

As a user, you can expect a much improved photo taking abilities in the near future. It’s unclear whether those APIs will involve releasing a whole new version (or sub-version) of Android, or rather a simpler update to the Camera app.

The RAW image files are notorious for their size, which at the same time make these photos look much better, paving the way for professional-style photo editor apps.

As for the burst-mode shooting support, it should bring HDR-like capabilities to lower-end devices. Major vendors like Samsung, HTC and Sony built their own camera software to make this possible; and with support included at the lower-level, even some mid-end devices should be able to “cope” with HDR photography. We’ll let you know when we hear something new on this…
