Square has acquired photo-sharing app ViewFinder in a move that would get the company the top talent and something else. We’re not sure why the mobile payments company needs ViewFinder’s assets, but we don’t have the complete picture anyway.
ViewFinder was founded by Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis, who will now serve as senior members of Square’s New York office.
Prior to ViewFinder, Mattis and Kimball developed the first version of the open-source GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) in the 1990s. Years later, while working together at Google, they helped spearhead the Google Servlet Engine and the company’s exascale distributed file system, Colossus.
Square likes what these guys did, calling the team “incredibly talented,” having built an app that “blends beautiful design and highly technical engineering to create personal, human experiences.” According to Square CTO Bob Lee, the Viewfinder team has passion, experience, and dedication to “pushing the envelope” making them a perfect fit for Square.
For the time being, existing Viewfinder users will be able to continue storing and sharing photos, but should not expect app updates or customer support.
Financial terms of the deal were not released.
