LG: Curved smartphones to account for 40% of all smartphones by 2018

The LG G Flex was just first in the series of phones with curved screens. LG plans to aggressively pursue this trend, and eventually have a whole range of such devices. In fact, they predict that flexible smartphones will hold 40% of the smartphone market by 2018.

“We got bored of flat” LG’s Dr Ramchan Woo, head of mobile product planning, said of the motivation behind the G Flex.

In its recent interview, Dr Woo talked about these kinds of devices, saying that curved screens are just one piece of the puzzle. Other components inside the phone also need to change, hence the G Flex was a result of a collaborating effort between LG Display, LG Innotek and LG Chem. Dr Woo added “We had to change our manufacturing facility, because it’s not just the display, it’s the batteries, etc. … it’s difficult. So it took, like, three years [to develop G Flex], but now it would be much shorter.”

While regular batteries use a curved stack of layers, the G Flex battery has a “Stack & Folding” design where each layer is distinct. Thanks to that, there’s no excess force at the edges and LG can in fact squeeze in even more capacity than with a flat pack.

Yup, the curved screens are here to stay. LG believes that by 2015, around 12% of smartphones will be curved or flexible in some way, and eventually reach the mentioned 40% by 2018…
