Pebble has done something really cool today, and that’s giveaway 4,000 of its smartwatches to CS and engineering programs at CMU, Stanford, MIT, Virginia Tech and other technology schools across the country.

The kind gesture is costing the company $600,000, but it’s well worth it when you think about the hands the watches are going in. This project houses some of the brightest minds in the United States. It’s also a brilliant move on the part of Pebble for getting people to work on their smartwatch, as it could bring in newer ideas to its functionality.

Doing things like this is necessary for a small company like Pebble as tries to stay ahead in the innovation column against giant smartwatch makers like Samsung and Sony — and maybe Apple or Google?
