Google acquires AI startup DeepMind for $500 million?

Google has apparently acquired an artificial intelligence (AI) startup DeepMind in a deal valued at some $500 million, recode is reporting.

The London-based DeepMind is said to be working on a number of approaches that could improve existing recommendation systems, which could presumingly help Google serve better search results. In addition, DeepMind also has a stake in e-commerce algorithms.

Founded about three years ago by programmer and neuroscientist Demis Hassabis, DeepMind could also help the search giant advance in the field of robotics. There are some underlying questions of combining the two technologies (AI & robots), so Google has reportedly set up an ethics board to ensure its artificial intelligence technologies aren’t misused. This, however, shouldn’t stop anyone from making Skynet jokes, right? 😉
