Apple’s A7 chip includes a number of components including CPU, GPU, cache, image processor, and TouchID “secure enclave”; and this year’s A8 chip may go one step further by adding an integrated DRAM to the mix. We’re guessing some performance enhancements will be achieved this way, but more importantly – the Cupertino giant will get the bragging rights to say the A8 is the world’s first mobile chip that integrates DRAM.
Apple did something similar with the A7, which was the first 64-bit mobile chip, the fact that prompted other chip makers to react with statements they’ll make such products in the near future, as well.
So what do we make of it? Nothing really. Apple makes both its hardware and software, allowing it to optimize the platform as only a few other companies can do. BlackBerry is one such company but it doesn’t really have a scale it used to.
As an end user, you should expect the familiar (almost) zero-lag experience from the next iPhone, which as far as we (don’t) know will be launched in the second half of the year.
Let’s also add that, according to DigiTimes, Amkor Technology and STATS ChipPAC will each package 40% of the Apple A8 orders with Advanced Semiconductor Engineering taking the last 20% of the packaging orders.
