More companies should make smartbooks!

During this year’s Mobile World Congress, Alcatel demoed its smartbook concept. The small, 11.6-inch laptop is like an empty shell with big battery, relying on smartphone for all of its processing needs. The screen is connected via Wi-Fi, while keyboard and trackpad – via Bluetooth.

Unfortunately though, Alcatel may decide to limit this accessory’s compatibility to its own phones, which is a shame to say the least. As far as I can tell, this kind of smartbook is something many people would want to buy. So why aren’t we seeing these devices?

The underlying technology has been available for few years now. The screen could be connected with cable (MHL) or wirelessly (Miracast), while keyboard would rely on a regular Bluetooth connection. I can’t really find a good reason why some handset makers — especially those struggling for the last year or so — aren’t pursuing this opportunity. Cause a smartbook would be a perfect post-phone-sale accessory for every savvy user.

Sure, that screen could be touch-enabled, but IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE! We’ll take whatever we can get.

I like the size of Alcatel’s smartbook, but more options would be better; like the one with a 10.1-inch screen that would create an even more portable device.

Anyway, I’m hoping that this article reaches some decision makers who could eventually move things in this direction…
