Samsung Galaxy S5 may be designated as “medical equipment” in South Korea

Samsung Galaxy S5 may be designated as "medical equipment" in South Korea

You know that the new Galaxy S5 is the first-ever smartphone to boast an integrated heart rate sensor. Well, that tiny detail may prompt South Korea’s health agency to designate it under the “medical equipment” category.

The process of Sammy’s flagship approval for medical purposes, however, shouldn’t affect the planned release date. “Even if it is designated as a medical device, the procedure for testing its safety and functions is not complicated,” said an official from South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.

We can’t help but note that Galaxy S5 is only the first in the series of devices that will come with this capability. So if Korea’s ministry decides to designate it as “medical equipment,” it will have to follow suit with every consecutive smartphone or tablet that integrates the same sensor. We’re not sure they necessarily want that…

Again, the Galaxy S5 is Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone with specs that include a full HD screen, 16-megapixel rear camera, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core chip, 2GB of RAM, LTE connectivity support and at least 16GB of internal storage. It should start selling on April 11th.
