Intel acquires smart watch maker Basis for $100-$150 million

We know Intel is looking to join the smart watch craze at some point this year. While we don’t have the firm date on when that will happen, we do know they’re working on small, power-efficient chips as we speak. That, apparently, is not enough as they still miss some expertise to create this product. Luckily that could be bought with money; and that’s exactly what Intel is doing, having acquired Basis, maker of the health-focused smart watch in a deal worth anywhere between $100 and $150 million.

Basis is known for its Basis B1 Health Tracker smart watch which is sold as a health-centric wearable gadget with a number of sensors that monitor various body functions of the user, such as the heart rate, the temperature of the skin, the sweat perspiration and sleep patterns. When it comes to collecting data, this device is touted as one of the most accurate fitness-oriented wearables.

So with Basis on its side, Intel could soon launch its own wearable device. Chances are the company doesn’t want to enter the consumer market directly, and will rather unveil a reference design platform (like Qualcomm Toq) that will be used by any number of Intel partners. We’ll let you know when we hear something new on this. Stay tuned…
