We’ve already heard that Samsung is looking to enter the smart glass market later this year with the rumored Galaxy Gear Glass debuting in September, during IFA in Berlin. While that’s still a rumor, we do think it makes perfect sense for the Korean giant to take this route. And now we have one patent application to show you what Korean engineers are working on.
Instead of relying on voice input, Sammy is looking to use augmented reality technology, projecting keyboard and other UI elements on one’s hand. The camera will then follow user’s thumb/fingers to determine what he/she wanted to type or accomplish.
This kind of UI is amazing, and could propel efficiencies across industries. Having attended last year’s InsideAR event in Munich, I’ve seen how different companies plan to utilize augmented reality technology. Just imagine a smart storage where workers inside big facilities are guided with a smart glass, telling them where they can find certain items. Powerful stuff.
Samsung, on the other hand, seems to be looking at end-users rather than businesses for its Galaxy Glass. The filling with the World Intellectual Property Organization and South Korea’s Korean Intellectual Property Office shows how smart glass can be used for basic phone functions like calling and texting. Looks pretty darn sexy to me. Can’t wait to see it in action. 😉
