LG has its Knock Code, and Samsung will soon have something similar. The patent filing with the USPTO describes a new system to unlock mobile devices using touch-and-drag input. The catch here is that you must create a drawing that has at least one intersection in it, while Sammy’s software will do its best to identify the shape.

This means that touch-based input will work at all times, even when the phone is in the standby mode, monitoring your touch & drag inputs to unlock your precious gadget if/when needed. Forget about using the power button to wake up the phone.

And that’s not all. Users will also be able to define different drawings to get directly into certain apps or fire-up previously defined functions. For instance, you can draw something with two intersections to instantly start the camera.

Cool stuff, though we’ll have to wait and see how this works in real world before coming to any conclusions. We are, however, confident that Samsung wants to hurry up with this to show the world that it too has its own version of the Knock Code. We’ll be watching where goes and get back to you when that makes sense. 😉
